Cross New Media Frontiers

In an era of social media, instant communication and break-neck technological advancement, documentary film has had to adjust to a rapidly changing environment.

Anyone with a video recording cellphone is now capable of filming, editing and uploading their personal stories for the world to see. This has had a profound impact on filmmakers and viewers. Sourcing funds for production and distribution are no longer significant obstacles as the Internet has provided the means and platform for budding filmmakers.

Although new media platforms have certainly assisted filmmakers, quantity does not necessarily mean quality. Read more about new digital frontiers and challenges in this panel discussion, Documentary Film and New Technologies, held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

As a leading documentary production company, STEPS has embraced the digital environment. The pioneering Why Democracy? project took advantage of the Internet in 2007 to market and inform web users of the global broadcast. In 2012, our new global project, Why Poverty? will show its films via broadcast and the Internet to get web users to interact with the most pressing social issue of our time.
